Ducks raise $2K for Relay

By Samantha Swindler / Managing Editor

More than 400 plastic ducks “raced” along the lazy river at the Kentucky Splash Water Park Friday evening, propelled by those who are looking for a cure.

Last year’s inaugural duck race raised about $1,200 for the Whitley County Relay for Life. This year, organizer Scotty Lickliter estimated the organization would net about $2,000 from the duck race.

The first duck to complete the lazy river lap belonged to Larry Lambdin, who won a flat screen TV from Wal-Mart.

Second place, a gift of two one-day passes to the Kentucky Splash Water Park, went to Teresa Goley.

Third place, a dinner for two at Cumberland Falls’ Riverview Restaurant, went to Penny Hall.

Fourth place, a digital picture key chain donated by Radio Shack of Williamsburg, was bought by the Dance Center of Williamsburg.

The very last duck to cross the finish line belonged to Pam Lawson, who won a $10 gift certificate to Factory Connection.

All proceeds from Friday’s duck race will benefit the Whitley County Relay for Life, which in turn benefits the American Cancer Society.

“Our survivor dinner is June 4, and we are going in with Corbin and having one big survivor dinner at the tech center,” Lickliter said.

Lickliter said survivors eat free at the event catered by David’s Steakhouse. Guests can join with a meal for $8.

The Corbin Relay for Life will be that following Friday on June 5. The Whitley County Relay will be Friday, June 12 at Whitley County Middle School.

Each Relay event lasts 12 hours throughout the night, because “cancer never sleeps.”
