Times-Tribune Staff Report
Tri-County Relay for Life organizers are “tying on one” to support the American Cancer Society.
As part of their “painting the town purple” fundraiser, organizers Whitney Allen, Lynda Meadows and Janette Pauley have been visiting Corbin businesses and selling purple ribbons — donated by Corbin Flower Shop and Betty’s Flowers —to benefit their annual Relay for Life event.
“We’ve just gone up and down town and asked the business owners if they would donate $10 to support Relay for Life,” said Lynda Meadows, who serves as survivor co-chairperson with Janette Pauley.
This year’s Relay event will begin at 7 p.m. June 20 at the Corbin Speedway. Since “cancer never sleeps,” participants during relays stay up all night and walk in teams, raising money for the American Cancer Society through sponsorships. Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags with the goal of keeping one person on the track at all times.
More than 4,800 relays are held nationwide each year.
“We invite all survivors, caregivers, friends and family,” Pauley said. “The Survivor Banquet is going to be held on the 19th of June, but the location is yet to be decided, due to the increase in survivors and guests.”

Look to see even more purple around town as more Relay teams plan fundraisers.
