CSX general car foreman Jerrod Cavanaugh was recently honored with a Patriot Award. The award recognizes employers for employment policies and practices that are supportive of employee participation in the National Guard and Reserve. Cavanaugh was nominated for this award by one of his employees, 1SG Michael W. Mills of Lily. A member of the ARNG, 149th IN. Ralph Brown, Area chairman for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the Department of Defense, presented the award.
“CSX as a whole prides itself on hiring former service members and certainly veterans,” said Sgt. Mills. “The company was ranked fourth in the nation last year for supporting the armed forces. This enthusiasm shows through my leadership as well as my fellow employees. When I mention to my supervision that I may be getting deployed, their response was, what can we do for you? When my Division Manager, Charlie Hare, found out I was deploying, he drives four hours to my location to shake my hand and tell me the team will miss me. Following that, he gets my personal information, such as children’s birthdays, spouse birthdays, and anniversaries, in which he has already followed up with flowers for my wife on her birthday. The flowers may not have been that expensive, but to me were priceless.”
