Corbin Water Plant finalist for outstanding performance award

Special to The Times-Tribune

The Corbin Water Treatment Plant’s operations staff was recently named a finalist for the Kentucky/Tennessee Section of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) 2008 Outstanding Plant Operation Award, which was awarded on July 22 at the annual Water Professionals Conference in Knoxville, Tenn. The Corbin Water Plant staff was one of two finalists for this award in the 5-10 million gallon per day category.

“It is the goal of the City Utilities Commission- Water Treatment Plant to provide a safe and dependable supply of drinking water,” said James P. Hampton, chief WTP operator. “We are always at work seeking the best way to provide top quality water to every customer’s tap. We were nominated for the award as a result of trying to accomplish our goals.”

The Outstanding Plant Operation Award is given each year to five water treatment plant operation staffs across the section’s territory, broken into three differenct plant size categories. Being a finalist for this award is an honor, considering there are approximately 498 registered water systems in Kentucky. Nominees are further graded through a written process and a site visit. The selection committee for KY/TN AWWA endeavors to recognize those plant operation staffs that have demonstrated exceptional performance in exceeding all federal drinking water standards and initiative to excel at the business of producing safe water for its customers.

“We are proud to provide our customers with the highest quality of drinking water,” said Hampton. “The water treatment plant makes every effort in meeting or exceeding all federal EPA and state of Kentucky drinking water regulation and standards.

“We are very grateful and honored for having been nominated for this award and are proud to have been one of the two finalists for water plants producing 5-10 million gallons per day.”

The Corbin Water Treatment Plant previously received the 2000-01 Outstanding Plant Operation Award.

The staff of the Corbin Water Treatment Plant: Ronald Herd, City Utilities Commission, General Manager James Hampton, Chief Water Treatment Plant Operator Barry Farris, Kemmy Lawson, and Susan Elliott, water treatment plant operators.
