Bubby’s BBQ: Continuing an American tradition

The backyard barbecue — it’s as American as baseball and rock-n-roll. If you’re looking for a good barbecue meal at a fair price, try Bubby’s BBQ on American Greeting Road.

Owner and grill master Marcus Shepherd has spent years perfecting his special barbecue. On the road as a truck driver for 15 years, Marcus (a.k.a. Bubby) sampled barbecue all over America. When he wasn’t on the road, you could find him in his backyard with the smoker and grill experimenting with all manner of sauces, rubs and cooking techniques. He finally settled on a style found often in Texas and Alabama. He cooks his barbecue low and slow, some recipes taking nearly 24 hours to prepare. On Friday nights he offers an all-you-can-eat buffet until 9 p.m.

His attention to detail is apparent in everything he serves to his customers. Jo, who has worked with Marcus since they opened in November, agrees.

“He’s very picky about the quality of the food he serves,” she said.

Along with the barbecue, Marcus serves side dishes found at any respectable picnic — potato salad, baked beans, fries, coleslaw, rolls and assorted desserts.

“It’s more of the backyard taste. We’re nothing fancy, we just have good food,” Marcus said.

Barbecue and fixins’ aren’t the only thing on the menu. Bubby’s specializes in country breakfasts. Marcus insists on making the gravy from scratch and using fresh eggs and potatoes. Feel like having an omelet early in the morning? Bubby’s is open at 5:30 a.m. and serves breakfast until 10:30 a.m.

“You’re going to get more food for less price at my place” said Marcus.

Bubby’s BBQ is located at 1509 American Greeting Road in Corbin across from Surplus Supply. Hours of operation are Tuesday-Thursday 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.
