The Whitley County School District has decided to close its schools district-wide for the remainder of the week. According to Regina Paul, director of public relations for the school district, the influenza outbreak has caused the closure. Schools are expected to reopen for classes Monday, March 4.

According to the healthalerts.ky.gov website, as of Feb. 12, flu activity is considered "regional," which means outbreaks of the flu have been found in at least two of the state's regions. According to the website, the numbers of cases of the flu have come down in recent weeks, after nine weeks of "widespread" flu activity. Widespread is the highest level considered in the health alert tiers — it means that more than half of the state's regions are showing high outbreaks of the flu.

At this time, no other school districts in the Tri-County area plan to close schools.
