One killed, one critically injured in accidental shooting

A London man was killed and a Williamsburg man was critically injured by the same bullet in an accidental shooting early Thursday, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

The shooting happened after 2 a.m. at a home on Sally's Branch Road. Witnesses told deputies several friends had gathered when Kevin McElrath, 25, of London, removed the clip from a 45 caliber pistol, which discharged. The bullet struck McElrath in the head, killing him, Root said.

The bullet then struck Eric Partain, 22, of Williamsburg, in the head, causing a critical injury.

Partain was taken by Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County to the London airport. He was then airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

McElrath was declared dead at the scene by by Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling.

Sgt. Chuck Johnson and Deputy Breet Reeves responded to the call.

Detective Sgt. Tommy Johnston continues the investigation. He is assisted by detectives Charlie Loomis and Daryl Zanet. Others who assisted at the scene were London Police Officer Ryan Jackson and Laurel County Fire Department.

    As of Saturday afternoon, the names of those who died were not identified and have not been confirmed. The victims were pronounced dead at the scene by Knox County Coroner Mike Blevins.
