Man sentenced for drug charge, assaulting govt. witness

CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

A Barbourville man was sentenced to five years in prison on a drug-related charge as well as for assaulting a government witness, according to Kyle Edelen, spokesman for Kerry B. Harvey, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky.

Kevin R. Engle, 23, had admitted he conspired to manufacture methamphetamine as well as his role in the assault, Edelen said.

Engle was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gregory F. Van Tatenhove. Engle was charged with conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine, conspiracy to cause bodily injury to a government witness and causing bodily injury to a government witness.

Engle had pleaded guilty to the charges in May.

In his admission, Engle said from 2009 through 2011 he provided pseudophedrine to others in Knox County who used the pills to make meth. In exchange, Engle received meth.

In April 2011, Engle and a co-defendent lured the witness to an isolated location and assaulted the witness. Edelen said the two stole the witness’ cell phone so the witness couldn’t call for help.

Engle was handed a longer sentence by Van Tatenhove because he had threatened another government witness during his first court appearance.

Federal law requires that Engle serve 85 percent of his prison sentence. Once released, he will have at least five years supervised release.

Harvey, Wendy Haney, Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Forest Service, and Rodney Brewer, Commissioner of the Kentucky State Police, jointly announced the sentence.

The investigation that led to Engle’s indictment was conducted by the U.S. Forest Service and the Kentucky State Police. The United States was represented in the case by Special Assistant United States Attorney Michael D. Pratt.
