Police Roundup - Nov. 20, 2012

CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

Theft, car chase lands London man in jail

Hiding behind a church didn’t help a London man escape arrest Sunday.

Johnny D. Brown, 39, of Laurel County faces charges of burglary, fleeing and evading, theft of a firearm, theft under $500 and criminal mischief.

Kentucky State Police requested assistance from the London Police Department after Trooper Stacy Walker responded to Miller Lane for a disturbance call.

Reports state the disturbance was caused by an ex-husband who had entered the home to steal a gun and had begun firing the gun inside the home.

Both Walker and London Police Officer Justin Hopkins arrived at the home and saw the suspect in a blue Chevrolet Cavalier.

When Hopkins turned his cruiser toward the vehicle, the Chevy sped off. Hopkins pursued the suspect down Miller Lane, then Court Road. The chase continued onto KY 1006, then on Old Union Church Road.

The suspect drove through several properties along Old Union Church Road, then left that road and drove on Hammons Lane.

The suspect attempted to conceal himself behind Victory Baptist Church.

Further investigation revealed Brown had entered the home illegally, stolen a handgun and assorted other items. Hopkins also recovered a .38 caliber Rossi revolver from the vehicle’s back seat.

Brown faces charges of first-degree burglary, fleeing and evading arrest, theft of a firearm, theft under $500 and criminal mischief.

Other officers involved include Jacob Bormann and Justin Roby.

Five children taken from London home

A mother of five was arrested Saturday after two of her children were found wandering the streets alone.

According to London Police Chief Stewart Walker, April Cathers, 26, of London, faces five counts of endangering the welfare of a minor.

A concerned citizen called the London Police Department to report the two small children roaming around South Main and Ballsinger streets without supervision and one without clothing.

Further investigation revealed the children, ages 4 and 5, had left their Ballsinger Street home one block away from where they were found.

At the residence, officers found three more children, ages 1, 6 and 7. They also found the home unfit for living after finding feline and canine feces on the floor, raw sewage on the bathroom floor and molded food on the kitchen counters and on the floor.

Officers were unable to locate any beds, and Cathers admitted the children slept on two couches and a chair.

The investigation continues by both the police department and Family Based Services.

Juvenile arrested after fight

A fight reported at apartments on Robert E. Cox Road brought Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Milton Storm to the scene Saturday.

Upon arrival, Storm witnessed a male fleeing the area on foot. According to Laurel County Sheriff John Root, a short foot chase ensued ending in the arrest of a “belligerent” male juvenile.

The teen was identified by witnesses at the apartment building. Root said the male victim had cuts on his face after being struck with a lamp.

Upon further investigation, deputies learned the 17-year-old suspect had a pickup order out against him. He was arrested and charged with fourth-degree assault.

He was jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
