CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

High-speed chase ends with arrest

A high-speed chase ended in an arrest Sunday.

According to Laurel County Sheriff John Root, the department has stepped up its enforcement along U.S. 25 between Corbin and London.

In that effort, Deputy Brett Reeves was patrolling there just after midnight Sunday when the radar clocked a vehicle being driven at a high rate of speed — 78 mph in the posted 55 mph zone.

Root said that car, a Ford Escape, was driven by Ronnie McQueen, 47, of London.

After turning around, Reeves turned on his emergency flashers.

Root said that prompted the driver to speed away at a higher rate of speed.

The sheriff said the driver of the Ford “recklessly passed other northbound traffic, and even cut off another vehicle near KY 1189 trying to get away.”

The suspect then turned off his headlights and pulled into the driveway of a random house.

McQueen allegedly fled the vehicle on foot, but Reeves was able to capture him.

He was arrested and jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center. He faces charges of speeding more than 25 mph over the posted speed limit, first-degree fleeing and evading police (by vehicle), reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence (after admitting he smoked marijuana before driving, according to Root), improper passing, no seat belt, no insurance card and driving on a DUI-suspended license.

A court appearance had not been set as of press time.

Convicted felon jailed on firearm possession

An attempt to sell a firearm on the Internet landed a Corbin man behind bars Saturday.

Laurel County Sheriff John Root says Christopher L. Sowards, 31, attempted to sell a weapon on the Internet.

Deputy Josh Scott and Corbin Police Officer Jeff Hill investigated a report of a possible stolen firearm for sale online.

The report came from the brother of a Rowan County sheriff’s deputy, who saw the firearm online and asked the deputy to check the serial number.

That’s when they learned the weapon was possibly stolen.

Root said a meeting was set up in southern Laurel County with the seller at 9:30 Saturday night. The seller had already sold the weapon in question, according to Root, but had another in his possession to sell.

That firearm was a 12-gauge shotgun. Scott and Hill met with Sowards, checked the weapon and determined that weapon had not been reported stolen. However, Sowards is a convicted felon, according to Root, and was arrested. Sowards now faces charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and operating a motor vehicle on a suspended license.

He was jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
