Two-vehicle crash on Hawk Creek Road

At about 1 p.m. Tuesday, a report came to the Kentucky State Police that there was a two-vehicle crash on Hawk Creek Road in Laurel County, west of London.

Trooper John Barnett arrived and saw that Robert Fondaw, 52, of Barbourville, on a Yamaha motorcycle, failed to negotiate a curve and struck a Chevrolet Malibu driven by Elva S. Waddle, 64, of London.

Waddle was wearing a seatbelt and Fandow was not wearing a helmet. The drivers had minor injuries.

No drugs or alcohol were suspected.

Barnett is in charge of the investigation.

$143,755 seized by interdiction team

At about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday in Whitley County, a Kentucky State Police Post 11 criminal interdiction team stopped a southbound speeding Chevrolet Malibu on I-75 about seven miles north of Tennessee.

During the traffic stop, the officers began to suspect some unlawful activity was underway.

The driver allowed the troopers to search the Malibu and there they found $143,755 hidden inside the driver’s luggage.

The driver was alone in the Malibu and charged only for the traffic violation.

The Drug Enforcement Administration was contacted and the investigation was passed over to that agency. The cash was seized by the DEA.

East Bernstadt man arrested for drug trafficking

Laurel County Sheriff John Root reported that about 4 p.m Tuesday afternoon. an investigation into drug trafficking began.

Laurel Sheriff’s Detective Jason Back arrested James Johnson, 60, of East Bernstadt.

He was charged with second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance.

It was learned that Johnson had gotten a prescription for hydrocodone tablets eleven days earlier.

The prescription called for 124 tablets and he said he had none left.

He told officers that the pills had been stolen.

He also told them that last month’s pills were also stolen.

Johnson was taken to the Laurel County Corrections Center.

Also arrested at the scene and jailed was Bobbie Barnes, 41, of London, charged on a bench warrant for public intoxication by a controlled substance.

Involved in the investigation were Sheriff Root, Lt. Rodney Vanzant and Detective Brad Mitchell.
