Police Roundup - Nov. 13, 2012

CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

31,000 lbs. of cargo dumped

More than 31,000 pounds of cargo was dumped onto a London street early Monday morning, according to Kentucky State Police-Vehicle Enforcement Public Affairs Officer Steven Douglas.

The cargo was dumped about 3 a.m. after a 2007 Freightliner driven by Martin Levine, 58, of Rock Hill, N.Y., got off route and traveled down a city street. Levine collided with power lines and a large tree, which separated the trailer and caused the load to spill near Alf Lane and Owens Road.

The intersection was closed for several hours while crews worked to restore power and to clean the debris from the road.

Kentucky State Police-Vehicle Enforcement Officer Rob Mitchell investigated. No drug or alcohol use is suspected and Douglas said the driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision.

Assisting at the scene were officers from KSP-Vehicle Enforcement, London City Police and Kentucky Utilities.

Ohio men arrested for rigged card game

Two Ohio men were arrested about 6:30 p.m. Saturday as police investigated a complaint about a card scam taking place at the Pilot Travel Center, according to Williamsburg Police Chief Wayne Bird.

Roy Tucker, 36, and John Branham, 55, both of Cincinnati, were luring truck drivers into playing a rigged card game for money, Bird said.

It isn’t the first time the department has gotten complaints about similar scams at the truck stop as well as the rest stop near Williamsburg. Bird said it isn’t known if Tucker and Branham are involved in those other scams or if different groups of scammers are operating in the area.

Tucker and Branham were charged with first-degree promoting gambling. Police seized $2,159 in cash.

Officers Brandon Prewitt and Elijah Hunter responded to the call.

Drunken juveniles found at home

A London woman was arrested early morning Sunday after deputies found her and several juveniles drunk in a Laurel County home, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Joann McHone, 48, at first refused to open the door to deputies, who were responding to a complaint made about 12:25 a.m. about fighting and shots being fired at the property located five miles east of London.

Deputies Kirk Mays, Brett Reeves and Shawn Boroviak responded.

After 10 minutes, McHone opened the door. Deputies determined she and several juveniles in the house were drunk.

McHone was charged with third-degree unlawful transaction with a minor. She was jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

Williamsburg man jailed for receiving stolen goods, theft of property

Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell said Shannon R. West, 34, of Petrey Road in Williamsburg, was arrested Friday and charged with receiving stolen goods and theft of property over $500.

Harrell said various items including a stove, washer and refrigerator were stolen from Charles King, of Bray’s Chapel Road in Whitley County.

“We received a report of an individual unloading these items (the appliances) at the Oak Grove Recycling place,” Harrell said. “This case remains under investigation.”

West was jailed in the Whitley County Detention Center.

Woman arrested for burglary

A Whitley County woman was jailed on burglary charges, according to Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell.

Carolyn Petrey, 27, of the Canadatown community of Whitley County, was arrested by responding Deputy Millard Root. Harrell said Root was dispatched to White Oak Road to investigate a burglary in process.

“Within an eighth of a mile (of the victim’s residence) Root found her walking,” Harrell said. “(And she) had the missing items on her.”

According to Harrell, she was carrying four pocket knives, a watch and a ring which had been reported stolen.

She was jailed in the Whitley County Detention Center. Harrell said the investigation is ongoing, and there is “a strong possibility” more arrests will follow.

Autopsy scheduled for Feather Creek woman

Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell said Deputy Millard Root responded to the Feather Creek residence of Mary Ellen Siler, 46, who was found dead in her residence Saturday.

Harrell said no foul play is suspected at this time, and that the Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting the autopsy.
