Barbourville's season comes to an end after 7-4 loss to Pineville in district semifinals

BARBOURVILLE — The Barbourville Lady Tigers (5-18) came into Thursday’s 51st District Tournament semifinal game against Pineville having beaten the Lady Mountain Lions twice this season by scores of 12-8 and 14-3.

As it turned out, the third time was the charm for Pineville (7-12) as they pulled off the 7-4 win to eliminate the Lady Tigers from championship contention and end their season altogether.

Barbourville found itself in a hole early in the game when the Lady Mountain Lions scored five runs in the first inning. Brandon Simpson’s squad mounted a semi-rally in the bottom of the seventh, but trimming the gap by a run, left runners stranded on second and third base.

After the loss, Simpson said the game was indicative of the way his team’s season went, having not been able to come through with timely hits when they needed to. The fact the game was delayed Wednesday and resumed Thursday afternoon may not have helped matters for his team either.

“We had a rough start that first inning and when we resumed play, we had already given up two runs,” he said. “When we picked up today, they had runners on second and third with no outs, so that’s tough mentally to overcome.

“We were just never able to string together enough hits to make a dent and that was the difference,” he added. “We made some noise late in the game, but we struggled this season with getting big hits when we needed them and we did the same thing in this game.”

Pineville’s lead didn’t stay at five runs for long as Brooke Bolinger and Amber Mills both singled and eventually came around to score in the Lady Tigers’ half of the first inning to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Pineville added a run in the third to push its lead to 6-2, but Madison Hicks singled and scored on an RBI by Bobbi Jo Rudd to trim the gap to 6-3 after four innings.

Pineville plated another run in the sixth inning to make the score 7-3 and the score stayed there until the bottom of the seventh when Barbourville scored once, but left runners on base to end the game.
